Trump or Death

Giant '𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗠𝗣 𝗢𝗥 𝗗𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗛' flag makes an appearance at Yankee Stadium Wednesday night (on Sept. 6) during the 7th inning traditional singing of 'God Bless America'." “Trump supporters unfurled the enormous flag from the mezzanine.” “Is it meant as a threat to onlookers? As in, you should vote Trump or you will Die? Or are they saying they’re willing to die if Trump isn’t elected? Or are they just saying that Trump is their ‘ride or die’?” (“It’s possibly a reference to the famous ‘Join, or die’ political snake cartoon published by Benjamin Franklin in 1754 as a symbol of colonial freedom, but given the right’s recent fondness for textbook banning & fact-denying, it doesn’t seem likely that they’re riffing on a history lesson.”) The Trump flag supporter said, “This is my new favorite flag. It doesn’t necessarily mean my death; 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵.”

(Also, last March, “former President Donald Trump escalated his rhetoric against the Manhattan district attorney's probe into a hush money payment made during his 2016 campaign, warning in an overnight post on his Truth Social site about ‘𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 & 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻’ if he is charged in the case.” Trump posted, “What kind of person can charge another person … with a Crime, when it is known by all that NO Crime has been committed, & also known that 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 & 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 in such a false charge could be catastrophic for our Country?”)

(1776: “One of Trump's last actions in office was an attempt to REWRITE American history.” “Trump's ‘1776 Report’ was compiled by an 18-person commission of mostly male conservative educators (𝗻𝗼 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀), who assembled the document & released it on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.” “In just 40 pages (20 of which are appendices), the report offered a framework for a ‘patriotic education’ to counter ‘false & fashionable’ histories that paint the country's founders as hypocrites who espoused egalitarian principles while protecting the institution of slavery.” “The report is easy to dismiss as thinly veiled propaganda or the last gasp of a disgraced administration. But reading it may also help us to understand how conservatives act as ‘political archeologists,’ selectively mining the past for symbols & anecdotes that can help them legitimize their power. Or seize it.” (“All politicians do this, but 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 seem especially anxious about how Americans define democracy, wanting to exalt it & 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲.”) “Similarly, the ‘1776 Report’ seems motivated at its core by 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴: losing elections, losing power &, more generally, losing the hearts & minds of the majority.” MAGA politics is primarily backward-looking & animated by a nostalgic 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 of the past.” “Trump & his supporters want to stake a claim on our very founding; 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 & 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲.”)
